When you are exposing white birds against the sky on an overcast day, ensure that you over expose by at least 1 to 2 stops.

The green out of focus foreground was achieved by lying flat on the ground and including the green grass of the lake bed.

We noticed the swallow feeding the young one. I then set up my equipment and waited for it to come back. After around 20 mins it did come back to feed and this time I was ready. Shot it in continuous mode to capture the action. Too bad about the wire. But then this is not very common, hence decided to shoot it.

One of the “must photograph” birds on my list was the white bellied shortwing. Eldhose helped me to locate the bird. It was in the shoals and not coming out. After trying for some time, we went back to a flowering tree where more birds were present. After a while we heard the call of the white bellied shortwing and went back to the same location where we had seen it. This time I could see it in the open. But before I could approach it, it disappeared. I cursed myself for not taking a record shot of it in the open. I waited in front of that open perch for a while. Suddenly out of nowhere it flew in and sat right in front of me at minimum focusing distance for my 500mm + 1.4x converter. I immediately started clicking. Since it was there for a long time, I managed to get some nice photographs. There were no bounds to my joy after photographing it. Later that night I previewed the images at the hotel and knew I had my catch of the day.

One more tip for shooting from the boat - Always use AF Servo mode when you are shooting while the boat is moving as the distance to the subject will always be changing because of the boat movement.

We were walking in the park when we heard the call of the ground thrush. We spent some time to get the visual of the bird. Once I got some decent shots, I approached it closely and made some more images.

This turned out to be the shot of the day. Eldose, my guide asked me to wait near the watchtower inside Thattekad and went into the woods. He came back smiling and said that I was really lucky as there were 3 of them perched together. He says its a bit rare to see 3 of them like this. From L to R -> Adult Male, sub-adult Female and Adult Female.

Since they were still, used 2.5 secs shutter speed and also increased aperture to f13 to get good DOF. i also shot this in timer mode so that there is no shake when I press the shutter release. When you have time with the birds do experiment with various settings and work on the subject.

We were driving on the Karmoda road at Nagarhole when we noticed this Brown Shrike perched on the road side. I had noted the meter reading from my lightmeter and had put that value in my camera. If the difference in stop values between the subject in light and the background is mopre than 2 stops, you get a dark background like what is seen here.

One tip in bird photography for any beginners - Drive down the country side in your vehicle and shoot from it. Your vehicle is one of the best hide to shoot birds.

The Pureple Swamphen, also called as Purple Moorhen is an extremely shy bird. I was lying flat on the ground for a long time and was able to take this photos as it walked past me. In bird photography, always try to get eye level shot of the bird, especially for ground birds. You get pleasant out of focus background which makes the image pop out.

This was photographed from the car. I was coming back to Bangalore and found this on the roadside bushes. I made sure there was no distractions in the background and took this image. That's an important tip in bird photography. Always watch for distracting elements in your frame and see how you can avoid it - either by changing your shooting position and wait for the bird to perch in open.

We saw 5 of these Vultures circling around us. This one is a sub adult. Since the sky was blue and the lighting was good, I did not have to compensate the exposure.

We were very lucky to come across this francolin, which is quite rare and hardly photographed in India. It was standing there was quite sometime which allowed us to take a lot of photographs.

Not a great shot from photographic perspective, but definitely a keeper as its hardly found.

While shooting birds against blue sky, you might want to compensate the exposure by 1/3 or 2/3 stop to get the dark blue sky. If it's a washed out sky, then remember to over expose the subject by around 2 stops to get details in the subject.

After shooting the Short Toed Snake Eagle, we were driving down the road and this Shikra flew in and sat beside the road, just beside our car. It then flew up this perch and sat there for almost 20 mins. We were in our car and could make some close portraits.

This was the first bird we saw when we entered the forest. This one was dancing with its tail open in front of the female. Then it flew up and sat on a perch close to us and we were able to appreciate its beauty from a close range. It’s a marvelous bird.

Here's a typical behaviour of the Green bee Eater caught in action. After catching an insect/fly, it repeatedly hits the fly to the tree branch and kills it. It then tosses up the fly and gulps it.

I saw this Myna on the walking path at Hebbak Lake. I slowely approached them and then laying flat on the ground, too this image. I normally lay flat on the ground to shoot ground birds. The eye level shot gives a pleasing background and makes the image look good.

Here's another example of a co-operative bird. I waited for the head turn with the catch light and tripped the shutter. I waited for it to fetch a fish, but flew off to another perch after fishing.

This is the famous rousting place of around 9 Spotted Owlets. We saw 5 of them together on another tree, beyond the reach of our equipments. When we arrived in the morning, we could not photograph them because of the fog. We had to wait for more than 3 hrs for the fog to clear and to get them in the light.

We found this Eagle on a dry tree not bothered with our presence. I asked the boatman to position the boat such that I get some amount of green from the tree far behind. Otherwise, because of the steep angle, I would have got the washed out sky. Another tip to keep in mind when you have a co-operative bird. Check the background and surrounding through the view finder to avoid any distractions.

This juvenile crested Serpent Eagle was noticed at Sapan Mori, basking in the Sun. It was a great moment to watch as the immature eagle displayed its open wings to us photographers who clicked their way to glory.

This particular bird used to catch the dragon flies in air and often fly back to this same perch. I studied its flight pattern and the perch it used and waited at this perch for it to come. I was behind some tall bushes and it acted as the perfect hide for me. I shot in continuous mode to capture its action and was happy to get this pose.

We reached the grassland, the habitat of the BHC at around 10am. After spending some time, we were able to spot the cisticola. But getting it in the frame was not an easy job, especially with the big lens. It used to pop up for a second and disappear under the grass. Then it used to pop up at a different place. Yathin was able to get some decent shots as he was moving around hand holding his lens. But we were fixed at one place with the tripod. After spending around 2 hrs, we decided to give it a break and try it again after some time or the next day.
We were on our way back to the resort and were passing the grassland where we had tried the BHC. Also, both Yathin and Vijay had got a decent document shot of this bird and I was there without even the tail of this bird. That's when I decided to leave the tripod behind and go after the bird hand holding my 500mm with the 1.4x converter. Even before yathin stopped the vehicle at the grassland, I got off and just walked away in to the tall grassland. I disappeared behind hills and was greeted by some 5-6 BHC's. I was so thrilled to see them, but at the same time was challenging to get them in the view finder. I finally managed to get some decent shots hand holding the lens.

This was shot at Kadam Kunj at around 4:30pm. We saw around 10-12 Indian Coursers.

I lay flat on the ground without much movement for around 30 mins and these approached me at very close distance. Since I was flat on the ground, shooting at eye level gave this pleasing image.

Hard work pays. I waited for more than an hour to shoot this bird. Once I spotted the birds feeding on the ground, I choose a location where these birds would pass and stayed flat on the ground for a very long time. After around 45 mins, they did pass in front of me and was able to get some shots of it.
